A Day in the Life of a Corporate Treasurer

This is the perfect course for professionals who need to get up to speed on how corporate treasurers work in today’s challenging market and their role in the organisation. It is based on the activities of a real treasury function and allows participants to ‘get inside the treasurer’s head’ while understanding how the corporate organisational structure impacts the life of a treasurer. 

Morning session: The treasury function in an organisation

This first session will:
  • Highlight current trends in corporate treasury
  • Examine a treasury policy and the instruments used
  • Look at different organisations and how their treasuries are organized (Centralised and decentralized models)
  • Discuss the influence of Treasury policy or lack thereof
  • Describe corporate financial supply chain flows and how they impact treasury
  • Outline the roles and responsibilities of a treasury function: Who are they, and what do they do? 
  • By following a day in the life of a typical corporate treasury and identifying tasks and influences, we will highlight the daily tasks as well as the short and long-term strategic responsibilities of a treasury team.

Afternoon session: Treasury short and long term goals including tools used and selection of banking relationships

Our second session will:

  • Take a deeper look at the main activities of treasury; Cash and Liquidity management  and Financial Risk management 
  • Discuss areas such as bank relations, , cash flow forecasting, investment, funding and foreign exchange 
  • Look at the tools commonly used by treasury teams such as bank systems, TMS and the use of banking products and financial instruments, and how they are deployed. 
  • Examine the changes being ushered in by new financial technologies.
  • Understand key issues in the RFP process from the customer point of view and the do’s and don’ts both from a bank and a customer perspective
  • Highlight the strategic reasons for selecting local and international banking partners.

 By the end of the course participants will: 

  • Understand the treasury function and what the treasury function has evolved to in these challenging times
  • Identify what the team’s tasks can be during a typical day 
  • Know what drives treasury decision-making and bank relationships 
  • Understand which financial instruments can be used to meet treasury objectives 
  • Enable the understanding of a what treasurer needs and give an insight into the issues they face both short and long term
  • Be able to respond more effectively to treasury overall needs both from a centralized as well as a decentralised organisation.

Course Tutor

David Kelin possesses invaluable commercial experience gained from nearly 30 years working in leading organisations in the areas of liquidity, treasury and cash management.  These include Bank of America, Citibank, Lloyds Bank and Alterna Technologies.  David was also Managing Director of Swallow Business Systems - a subsidiary of Bank of America that developed the world’s first PC-based Treasury Management System – International Treasurer.  David set up his own successful consultancy business in 2004, which he later sold to Zanders NL. David now  He was the first person in Bank of America to achieve the ACT International Cash Management (ICM) qualification and was subsequently a tutor for the ACT on this course and has taught students in the UK, Belgium, Denmark and Hong Kong. He holds a degree in Business Studies from Trinity College, Dublin and a Diploma in Advanced Marketing Techniques from the College of Marketing, Dublin.
